Willoughby 2nd XI v Mears Ashby 2nd XI

Saturday saw the visit to The Green of Mears Ashby 2nd XI to be greeted by pretty much perfect cricketing weather.

After having to concede the previous week Willoughby were looking to get the season back on track against mid table Mears Ashby.

Stand in captain Ian Andrews won the toss and elected to bat, hoping to get a good score on the board to pile pressure on to the opposition.

The innings got off to a bad start with Praneeth being bowled 2nd ball, but Ian and Stuart Hall began to settle the nerves in the face of some accurate bowling. Ian eventually departed for 13, LBW to the spin of Bhatti. Stu was now beginning to accelerate nicely, and joined in the middle by Dave Alcock they began to up the tempo.

Stu unluckily picked out the boundary rider on 47, a catch I don't think anyone on the field expected to be taken. A flurry of wickets then followed, Alcock among them going for 26 after top edging a sweep from Bhatti. Karthik and Harry Lacey added some good late runs, 22 and 15 respectively, with the innings closing on 162 for 9. Probably 20 or so short of a par score.

The Mears innings began in positive fashion, Rasool in particular looking like he'd had too many Red Bulls! After a quick 36 opening partnership Bhatti holed out to Alcock fielding in his specialist position in the deep off of Fergus Deery, and then Rasool followed in similar fashion.

The scoring began to slow down with the Willoughby bowlers piling the pressure on - Fergus from one end being joined by Sean Thornton from the other. Fergus ending with an excellent 1/25 from his spell of 10 overs.

Alcock replaced Fergus, and 2nd ball bowled the dangerous looking Shah. From there on wickets fell at fairly regular intervals leaving Mears at 127/7. A somewhat fortunate 30 partnership then saw them almost across the line until Bhatti (Irfan) was bowled by Alcock. A very close shout for LBW not given against the new batsman was the last real chance - the opposition finally getting across the line.

Wickets were shared around with Ram ending with 1/33 off 5, Sean 1/24 from 7, Dave Alcock 4/25 from 8 and Karthik with 1 for 14 from 2 (what looked the key wicket of Emaan Bhatti with his first ball!).

Close but no cigar for the 2s - a good performance but fell slightly short. We go again next week!
